Rosalie Fish, the athlete who runs to denounce femicides and abuse of women

He does not run for a medal, nor for money. Rosalie Fish has Native American origins and belongs to the Cwlitz tribe of the Muckleshoot reservation. A student at Iowa Central Community College, Rosalie quickly understood the importance of being able to defend minorities and so here she is, increasingly competing, with the sole aim of turning the spotlight on such a delicate and important topic.

Close to social commitments, Fish has started a vast awareness campaign on the problem of missing and killed indigenous women a couple of years ago (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women – MMIW). A bad story that involves and overwhelms the United States and Canada above all.

Rosalie Fish’s praiseworthy initiative came to the attention of the news was an idea that the 20-year-old from Washington had while preparing to participate, in May 2019, in a competition in the state of Washington.

At the start, in fact, the Fish showed up with the imprint of a red hand drawn on the mouth, with the fingers that widened up to the cheeks. A way to say enough to silence, no to submission. Since then, Rosalie Fish has participated in competitions with this symbol on her face and has become well known, contributing greatly to the spread of a message as simple as it is right: hands off indigenous women.

In addition, at every running event in which she takes part, Rosalie announces the name of a woman to whom she dedicates her company. Among these, too his aunt Alice Looney, who was murdered. Rosalie Fish’s initiative has been an example to other girls who run for the same team. Some, in fact, have adopted the idea to become testimonials of various campaigns in favor of women, above all the famous #MeToo.

The data, worrying, of the Department of Justice of the United States of America arrive. According to a recent study, in some reserves indigenous women would suffer sexual violence and femicide with a probability two and ten times higher than the national average, respectively.

With 10,2 thousand followers on Instagram and hundreds of fans accompanying her on American roads, Rosalie Fish is ready to run strong with the goal, one day, of to be able to “erase” that red hand over his mouth.
