Rosatom buys Elbrus developers: there is a chance to save processors

Today, February 10, the Kommersant news outlet, citing its sources, reported that the structures that are part of the state corporation Rosatom have come to a final decision to acquire the developer of Russian Elbrus processors, the MCST company. The sources of the publication added that the acquisition of MCST was carried out on a direct instruction from the government, which plans to keep the domestic microchip developers in a rather difficult situation due to many foreign sanctions and restrictions in terms of production.

According to the publication, the NPO Critical Information Systems, which is part of the state corporation Rosatom, will become the new owner of the shares of the MCST company – it will own 100% of the shares. In addition, which is quite interesting, the negotiations of the leadership of Rosatom on the acquisition of MCST began in the summer of 2021, but then the owners of the block of shares requested too impressive an amount for the Russian design company of microchips, which, apparently, Rosatom did not agreed. And, probably, the situation changed last fall, when the Russian company was included in the list of banned companies of the US Department of Commerce.

The company, being under sanctions bans, found itself in an extremely unenviable position, because it became almost impossible to produce processors according to its drawings. But the developments of MCST are an extremely important asset of the state, so the government decided to keep the finished developments.

“Rostatom has enough funds, competencies and personnel to ensure the development and production of unique Russian processors,” added Sergey Ovchinnikov, head of the largest partner of MCST.

Indeed, industry experts are sure that Rosatom can afford to take sanctions risks in connection with the acquisition of the Russian design agency MCST, since it will be quite difficult, if not impossible, to exclude the Russian nuclear industry from the world market. Moreover, experts note that the products and services provided by the state corporation remain in high demand in many countries, so this step can really save MCST from conditional death after Taiwan’s factories refused to produce the corresponding processors at their facilities.
