And although in the real world this scenario of the development of events is unlikely and, fortunately, in the entire history of astronautics, not a single cosmonaut has irrevocably flown into outer space, the staff of the Samara Research University named after S.P. Korolev decided to create a special protection system that will save the astronaut in if something like this actually happens. To do this, they have developed a special “rescue satellite” that will protect the astronaut while performing work in outer space, the TASS news outlet reported, citing its sources.
“The system is designed to return the astronaut back to the station if the safety ropes failed during the exit and there was a threat to fly into outer space,” the authors of the program said.
Experts said that the satellite device will use the latest guidance system to monitor an astronaut who is in outer space and performs technical or scientific work. In the event that there is a danger that the specialist will lose contact with the ISS, the spacecraft will release a rescue cable – it must hook the astronaut and return it back to the space station. And although the technology has only just been developed, representatives of the state corporation Roskosmos are already studying the option of installing these security satellites on the future Russian orbital service station. Accordingly, there is a high probability that the astronauts on the ISS will not install a “hunter satellite” – it may well become an exclusive component of the ROSS.
