Roscosmos intends to conduct an experiment to search for resources on the moon

The exploration of lunar resources, as well as the control of the activities of public and private spacecraft are important tasks of the Russian program for the exploration and development of the Moon for 2016-2025. According to this program, in a couple of years the launch of the Luna-26 automatic interplanetary station, which will explore the surface of the Earth’s satellite, should take place. It is assumed that this entire process will take place remotely from a circumlunar polar orbit. In addition, the tasks of the station also include mapping the mineralogical composition and creating a map of the distribution of water ice on the Moon.

According to the Roscosmos website, the state corporation is working on how to carry out these tasks, and one of the methods is monitoring the lunar surface in the infrared range. The Central Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (TsNIIMash), which is part of Roscosmos, has prepared proposals for an experiment to determine the properties of tiny objects on the surface of the Moon with low reflectivity. The Institute proposes to do this with the help of optoelectronic equipment in the infrared range on a spacecraft from a lunar orbit at a height of 50-100 km. The equipment can be installed on the lunar module, which will follow the Luna-26 mission.

Thus, Russian scientists will be able to remotely determine the size of objects, their temperature and degree of blackness. These data will make it possible to draw preliminary conclusions about the mineralogical composition, density, and mass of objects. TsNIIMash proposes to choose lunar craters for observations, which have a strong elevation difference and a favorable temperature range of the lunar surface.
