The success of the movie “Titanic” made many objects used in the filming become collector’s items. This time, the American auction house Goldin is auctioning off the pink overcoat worn by Rose, the character played by Kate Winslet, in the final scenes, when the vessel begins to sink.
By the time this article was published, the last offer made for the overcoat was US$ 34,000 (R$ 166,600), but Goldin says it believes that the value could be even higher.
“It’s definitely a six-figure piece,” Ken Goldin, founder and CEO of the auction house, tells the New York Post. “It will cost more than US$100,000″ (about R$490,000). The closing date for offers is September 13th.
According to the “New York Post”, the coat was created by Deborah Lynn Scott, who won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work in the James Cameron film. The overcoat was produced by the J. Peterman Company, and then purchased from 20th Century Fox by a person who hired Goldin to auction it off.
The piece comes with a letter confirming use by Kate Winslet signed by Fox and the J. Peterman Company.
Rose wears the piece that is first seen when her fiance, Caledon Hockley, accompanies her as they make their way to the lifeboats moments after the Titanic collides with the iceberg.
According to the website, the overcoat made of wool still preserves visible water stains on the interior and inner silk and features intricate floral embroidery in black in line with the fashion of the time.
An example of how objects in films can reach high values is the dress worn by the character Rose in her suicide attempt, when she is convinced to the contrary by the character Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. According to Goldin, the piece used by Kate was sold for US$ 330,000 (about R$ 1.6 million) in 2011.
