Against the backdrop of a global increase in crime in the crypto industry, Rosfinmonitoring, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB are conducting about 400 financial investigations and more than 20 criminal cases related to the illegal circulation of digital assets.
The head of Rosfinmonitoring, Yuri Chikhanchin, reporting the situation on crimes with cryptocurrencies in the country to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that Rosfinmonitoring, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB, are conducting 400 investigations into the illegal use of digital currencies.
“Only at two sites there are several hundred thousand Russian citizens, tens of billions are participating. And we see that there are not only settlements, not only speculative transactions, but also drug trafficking, financing of terrorism and extremism, cybercrime, and so on. Together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB [ведутся] somewhere around 400 financial investigations, more than 20 criminal cases,” Chikhanchin said.
The head of the department drew attention to the fact that a specialized resource called “Transparent Blockchain” has become a significant help in monitoring criminal transactions of cryptocurrencies.
“The project that you supported helps us a lot. This is the so-called transparent blockchain, which allows us to go through the chain from the sender to the recipient. Now this project is being carried out jointly with the Bank of Russia, VTB is leading it as the main one with us, and we are entering other types of currencies. I think we will try to launch it,” Chikhanchin said.
In February last year, the head of Rosfinmonitoring reported on the development of a service for tracking cryptocurrency transactions related to criminal activity. Then he said that the “Transparent Blockchain” would make it possible to see any movement of crypto assets in blockchains and identify the ultimate beneficiary.
