Roskomnadzor admits slowdown and blocking of other social networks following Twitter

In Russia, the fight against prohibited content continues. Recently, the microblogging service Twitter fell victim to Roskomnadzor, its work in the country has already been slowed down, and in a month it may be completely blocked. But the regulator is not going to stop there.

According to Kommersant, the deputy head of Roskomnadzor Vadim Subbotin does not exclude the possibility of slowing down work in Russia and other social networks, including the popular Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. They may be subject to sanctions if they do not comply with government requirements to remove information banned in the country. Social networks and other sites that do not comply with Russian laws face administrative fines, traffic slowdowns and even complete blocking in Russia. According to Subbotin, several administrative processes are currently underway in relation to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter. These social networks can be fined for not deleting prohibited information on a number of episodes.

As for the complete restriction of access, Twitter may be the first to be hit. On Monday, March 16, Roskomnadzor promised to block Twitter if a foreign social network does not delete all publications with information prohibited in Russia within a month. And, according to Subbotin, the department has all the technical capabilities to block it. Most likely, in this Roskomnadzor the Russian provider of digital services and services Rostelecom, which recently completely bought out the software developer for blocking sites for 1.81 billion rubles.
