A little over a month ago, on June 17, Roskomnadzor introduced strict restrictions on the use of the popular VPN services VyprVPN and Opera VPN. Soon after that, the developers of the Opera browser even stopped working all their VPN services in the application in Russia. However, the regulator did not stop there, because now six services have been blocked at once (Hola VPN, Express VPN, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited, Nord VPN, Speedify VPN and IPVanish VPN) – this was reported by RBC with reference to the press service of Roskomnadzor … The reason for blocking is that they provide an opportunity to conduct illegal activities on the territory of Russia.
For example, representatives of the regulator said that VPN services that were blocked create all conditions for the distribution of drugs, child pornography, extremism and more. Accordingly, in order to make life more difficult for violators of the law, Roskomnadzor blocked the activities of these services on the territory of Russia, while taking care of the so-called “white lists”. This list includes Russian companies that are forced to use VPN services to support technological processes. Since this scenario does not imply violation of laws, no restrictions are imposed on these companies.
To form a list of companies that should not suffer from VPN blocking, Roskomnadzor employees in June turned to 64 industry organizations with a request to notify the regulator if the company uses one of the above VPN services in its work. Based on feedback from 27 companies, 109 IP addresses were collected and added to the whitelist. Naturally, ordinary users will not be provided with such an opportunity.
