Today, March 10, Roskomnadzor employees published the news that access to the popular social network Twitter will be artificially limited – for this, the work of the microblogging network in Russia will be slowed down in accordance with the regulations. They promise to implement the slowdown of the social network on 100% of mobile devices and 50% of stationary systems, and the reason for such harsh measures is the violation of the legislation of the Russian Federation – Twitter employees have repeatedly refused or simply did not respond to legal requirements to remove prohibited content.
Roskomnadzor said that the social network Twitter since 2017 has not removed various illegal content such as persuading underage users to commit suicide, child pornography, information about the use of drugs, and so on. Employees of the department sent over 28 thousand requests to the company’s head office to remove various publications and links that violate the legal framework, but Twitter representatives react to these requests very selectively. For example, as of March 10, 2021, 3168 publications containing prohibited content are still in the public domain.
At the same time, the lion’s share of these publications, directly or indirectly, call on minors to commit suicide. Roskomnadzor also reported that if the Internet service continues to ignore legal requirements, further measures will be taken in accordance with the regulations – up to a complete blocking of the social network in Russia, until Twitter employees completely remove posts calling for suicide, child pornography and information about narcotic substances. Unfortunately, the employees of the social network have not yet responded to the slowdown in access to their service.
