Roskomnadzor thinks to apply economic sanctions against YouTube

Roskomnadzor may take tough measures against YouTube video hosting in response to the blocking of Russian media channels (in particular, RT DE). According to the Izvestia publication, citing a message from the Russian regulator, the possibility of introducing economic restrictions is currently being considered, including a ban on advertising in the Russian Federation, search results, payment restrictions, and so on. The measures considered by Roskomnadzor are provided for by the Federal Law “On the Activities of Foreign Persons in the Information and Telecommunication Network “Internet” on the Territory of the Russian Federation”.

Recall that in December 2021, YouTube blocked the account of the RT Deutsch TV channel, which broadcasts in German, for bypassing the restrictions imposed earlier. It all started with the blocking of two RT DE YouTube channels in September last year for spreading false information about COVID-19. Later, the channel was taken off satellite broadcasting. In total, YouTube blocked five accounts and nine materials from Russian media over the past year. The official accounts of the NTV, Rossiya 24, TVC, Russia Today, Sputnik and other media channels were blocked. The Russian Foreign Ministry called such actions information aggression and, as a response, stopped broadcasting the German channel Deutsche Welle.
