The Rostelecom Competence Center for the development of programs for Russian processors reported that with the support of MCST JSC, a domestic cloud platform Russian Cloud Elbrus was created. It runs on Elbrus processors developed by MCST JSC. It is said to be the first private Russian cloud based on domestic processors.
In a press release on the platform, it is said that using container virtualization, several services can be launched on one server, and each of them receives a unique system environment, including different operating systems. This significantly reduces the total cost of ownership of the hardware and software platform.
Now the software platform is deployed in Rostelecom at its own development and testing stands on Elbrus servers. It includes user environments “Elbrus Linux” from MCST and “Alt Linux” from “Basalt SPO” as operating systems.
The process of transition to the Russian hardware base is fraught with certain difficulties, including the need to refine existing information systems and the lack of specialized specialists capable of performing development on the domestic technology stack. In addition, there are no off-the-shelf virtualization platforms. In this sense, the Russian Cloud Elbrus is the first example of the implementation of industrial-level container virtualization technology for the Elbrus platform. Its implementation is simplified due to the availability of experienced specialists in Rostelecom who have programming skills for Elbrus processors. In the future, the company intends to provide customers with a containerization software platform for the Elbrus architecture, and now interested customers can get access to the cloud to develop, port and test their software on the domestic hardware and software stack.
