The spire of the Gothic cathedral in the French city of Rouen, in Normandy, caught fire on Thursday (11) during renovation work, according to television images.
The cathedral, one of the most beautiful in France, was painted several times by the impressionist artist Claude Monet in the 19th century.
Television footage from the BFM channel showed a cloud of dark smoke rising from the top of the cathedral and people on the streets looking up in horror.
The scene was reminiscent of the devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 2019, which also started during renovation work.
The spire of Rouen Cathedral has been surrounded by scaffolding and a white covering for several weeks.
The city hall said the cathedral had been evacuated and emergency services were on site. A security cordon had been put in place around the building.
The city government said there were no reports of casualties and the extent of the damage was unclear at this time.
