The coronation of King Charles III takes place next Saturday (6), at Westminster Abbey, in London, and has become one of the most talked about subjects of the moment.
Gathering many fans and critics, the British royal family has already been represented in several productions such as films, series and documentaries and, each one, portrayed royalty in its own way.
Although King Charles III is not the focus of most royal stories, he has already gone through some controversies such as his troubled marriage to Princess Diana, and his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, and these stories were portrayed in some works.
Check out a list of productions about the royal family below:
The Crown
The Crown became the most well-known and controversial production on the subject around the world, being commented on several times by the family itself. The five-season series produced by Netflix begins the story there in 1940, before Elizabeth II became queen. The production, based on real events in the queen’s life, focuses mainly on the monarch and the controversial events that surrounded the family throughout her years of reign, as was the case with the marriage between Charles and Diana.
Many fans of the royal family criticize the way in which the now King Charles III was portrayed in the work. Some “royal family experts” say that Charles was left as the villain, while Diana became the “little lady” of the story, when the couple’s divorce was depicted in season five.
In addition, netizens also point out that Dominic West, the actor who gives life to Charles in the production, would be “too handsome” to play the monarch on the small screen. About this, Dominic revealed to Jimmy Kimmel’s program that he has already received worse reviews, and talks about the moment in Charles’s life that he reproduces, declaring it to be a “great responsibility” to play Charles in a moment considered one of his worst times. “You see pictures and videos of him and he is very, very sad. It’s a big responsibility to go through that,” he explained.
According to People, during the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Charles spoke about the production and made it clear that he does not recognize himself in the scenes of the series.
spencer
Available on Prime Video, Spencer portrays one of the Christmases that Lady Di spent with the British family, and reviews the critical moment of Diana and Charles’ wedding when rumors of betrayal and lies were at full steam.
In the film, King Charles III was played by Jack Farthing who revealed that he had difficulties in preparing the character. For Insider, Jack told that it is very complicated to enter a place and take possession of it as if it were his own. “Obviously it’s a scary idea, trying to play someone like that. Trying to find your own truth in a character that everyone knows so well, is so public and memorable, and so personified,” he said.
King Charles III
Although Charles is hardly at the center of attention of productions on the subject, in 2017 he won a film about his possible future history.
Starring Tim Piggot-Smith, the portrayed moment simulates the current moment. Charles takes the throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, but causes a series of controversies and rebellions after refusing to sign a bill. In the feature, they portray the monarch as someone who has strong political views and have been praised for it.

The Windsors
The series “The Windsors”, a satire on the British royal family, launched a “coronation special” at the end of April. An episode focusing on King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla Parker Bowles was released days before the King’s official coronation, and it’s been making waves on social media, with rave reviews from fans of the royal family.
In the episode, Charles is informed that the nation will not be able to afford a traditional ceremony, but the king (played by Harry Enfield) insists on a mega ceremony. In the sitcom, in general, the monarch is represented as a naive and spoiled man, who has no knowledge about the outside world, and is just waiting for his mother to pass away for him to become king.
The Windsors are back and they’re more deluded and dysfunctional than ever before! Plus, one of them is being crowned King…
