From diplomatic attire and priceless jewelry, bold colors and pearls to a head scarf – the british queen elizabeth is known for its unique style and wardrobe.
Brightly colored outfits with matching hats and umbrellas, black shoes and her ubiquitous handbag are staples for the 96-year-old monarch, who celebrates her Platinum Jubilee this year.
“She developed her own style,” says Elizabeth Holmes, author of “HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style,” which collects thousands of photos of the style of the British monarchy.
“She has the same hat shape, the same coat silhouette, those fantastic black heels, her three pearl necklaces. But also within those grids, she has a lot of fun with fashion… The queen is famous for her bold, solid color looks.”
These colors range from canary yellow and bright green for your grandchildren’s weddings, Princes William and Harry, in purple and pink for the horse races at Ascot. She has chosen red, blue and orange on official visits.
“There’s a tremendous amount of thought put into the queen’s wardrobe and it’s very important because when she gets out of the car, everyone looks at what she’s wearing. Everyone wants to see the queen,” Holmes said.
At the beginning of her reign, 70 years ago, Elizabeth’s clothes were made by royal stylists. Hardy Amies and Norman Hartnell , who created her wedding and coronation dresses. More recently, personal assistant, counselor and curator Angela Kelly has been planning her wardrobe.
“The Queen has a fantastic understanding of clothing and fashion and is very aware of what suits her, what would be appropriate for any occasion,” Kelly wrote in her 2012 book, “Dressing The Queen.”
