RS: after saying that donations can impact local commerce, Eduardo Leite apologizes

This Wednesday (15), Eduardo Leite (PSDB), governor of Rio Grande do Sul, published a video on social media, in which he apologized for a response given in a radio interview yesterday afternoon (14).

At the time, the governor said that “when you have such a large volume of physical donations arriving in the state, there is concern about the impact this will have on local businesses. Rebuilding this trade becomes difficult as you have a series of items coming from other parts of the country”.

The statement was given in an interview with BandNews FM radio.

“First of all, my thanks to everyone for the gigantic mobilization and solidarity in favor of the Gaúcho people. I ask you to understand, among so many concerns that the tragedy brings us, there is also the situation of our small traders. When talking about this situation, I ended up mixing it up with the issue of donations. The impact on local commerce will be a concern for another time and not during this wave of solidarity”, continued Eduardo Leite.

Leite also says that the government's challenge is to deal with the logistics of the countless donations, which keep arriving in the state, and how to make sure these items reach those who really need them.
