The government of Rio Grande do Sul launched a program this week that aims to “promote the well-being” and adoption of dogs and cats in vulnerable situations, especially those affected by the floods in April and May. According to data from the platform that gathers data provided by municipalities, RS has 3,600 animals in shelters.
Investments for the program amount to more than R$7.7 million.
The government also announced the hiring of technical consultancy from the Instituto Medicina Veterinária do Coletivo (IMVC) to diagnose the situation and support the development of public policies. With an investment of R$540,000, the institute is expected to collect data, carry out technical visits to shelters, analyze existing initiatives and formulate strategies for animal health.
About the initiative
The announcement is part of an initiative that works on three fronts to combat the effects of the floods: emergency actions, reconstruction actions and Rio Grande do Sul of the future.
The emergency program should transfer financial resources to municipalities in public calamity, based on the number of animals sheltered. The total estimated for the program could reach R$5.6 million over a one-year period, considering a value of R$188.85 per animal per month. The resources will be used to guarantee essential supplies, food and veterinary care.
A project to control the population of dogs and cats, which aims to sterilize and microchip the animals, will be implemented in addition to the emergency program. The state expects to transfer up to R$1.66 million for population control of animals, with the procedures being carried out by certified veterinary clinics, which ensure that all procedures are carried out in accordance with current regulations.
Adoption program
The state government also launched the “Adopt a Pet” campaign to encourage the responsible adoption of rescued dogs and cats.
The campaign’s communication uses the slogan “Be a hero too”, in allusion to actions that saved lives during the climate tragedy that struck the state in April and May 2024. The campaign seeks to raise awareness and encourage people to adopt a pet that survived the tragedy.
The adoption incentives, however, include requirements for castration, microchipping and complete vaccination. The organization of temporary homes is provided for in the project, with the possibility of taking in up to ten animals per residence, according to criteria established at adoption fairs.
