RS confirms first case of Ômicron variant; Brazil has six cases of new strain

The State Center for Health Surveillance (Cevs) of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed, this Friday afternoon (3), the first case of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus in the state.

The confirmed case is a woman residing in Santa Cruz do Sul, who returned from a trip from South Africa last week.

With this, Brazil has six of the new strain of coronavirus: three in São Paulo, two in the Federal District and, now, confirmation of the case in Rio Grande do Sul.

The state Health Surveillance received the patient’s sample early this Thursday afternoon and performed the complete genomic sequencing of the virus, which confirmed the variant initially identified in southern African countries.

The woman is in home isolation and is monitored by the municipality’s health surveillance.

She received two doses of Covid-19 vaccine and, after testing positive, developed a fever. Contacts will also be tested for the disease.

Faced with the confirmation of the new variant in the state, the Secretary of Health, Arita Bergmann, reinforced the need to reinforce basic care, especially the use of masks and adequate distance.

In addition, people who have not yet been vaccinated should look for health facilities. This Friday, 842,000 people in the state were late on their second dose, and 721,000 on a late booster dose.
