RS: Police arrest suspects of selling medicines damaged by the flood

The Civil Police carried out, this Friday (10), a search and seizure warrant in the warehouse of a pharmacy chain in São Leopoldo, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (RS).

The action was taken to investigate a complaint that there were expired, contaminated medicines by the floods that devastated Rio Grande do Sul in 2024.

Two individuals, owners of the establishment, were taken and charged with committing crime.crime against public health and crime against consumer relations.

According to the Civil Police, the group was cleaning affected products to be redistributed to branches and subsequently sold to the public.

At the search site, they found tons of medicines and cosmetic products that were expired and/or affected by floods, stored irregularly.

According to the Health Surveillance, which closed the establishment, even though some products were not affected by the flood, the place was unsanitary and unsuitable for storage.

Floods in Rio Grande do Sul

Considered the worst climate tragedy in the history of Rio Grande do Sul the heavy rains that hit the state in May 2024 caused the death of 183 people.

The storms affected more than 2.3 million people by hitting 471 municipalities, equivalent to almost 95% of all cities in Rio Grande do Sul.

At the height of the rains, around 79,000 people were left homeless after having their homes washed away or destroyed by water.

Due to the damage, the state government created the Rio Grande Plan, a program that has already invested R$2.4 billion in measures to mitigate the impacts caused.
