RS suspends events with birds for 90 days to prevent avian flu

As a way of preventing the risk of the avian flu virus entering Brazil, the State of Rio Grande do Sul decided to suspend, for 90 days from February 17th, all singing tournaments and exhibitions of native and exotic birds , even those who already had authorization issued.

According to a note from the Secretary of Agriculture of Rio Grande do Sul, any meeting of poultry breeders was also suspended for the same period.

“The measure complies with Normative Instruction 1/2023, jointly issued by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi) and the Secretariat of the Environment and Infrastructure (Sema), as a preventive measure against avian flu”, quote folder.

Although cases of highly pathogenic avian flu have been registered in neighboring countries, such as Argentina and Uruguay, Brazil is still free of the disease. In view of this, the government of Rio Grande do Sul said it had increased surveillance and preventive measures, “since exposure to infected migratory wild birds is the main risk factor for transmission to domestic birds.”
