RS’s struggle: CNN returns to the state one year after historical floods

A year after the historical floods that devastated Rio Grande do Sul, CNN returns to the state for a special series that documents the struggle for the reconstruction and survival of the affected communities.

The series reveals that 25 people remain missing, according to the latest balance of the State Civil Defense. In Roca Sales, for example, a resident still seeks two family members who have not been found from the floods.

The reports also address various aspects of reconstruction, from infrastructure to economic and psychological impact on communities. One of the highlights is the inauguration of the new bridge in RS 130, which connects the municipalities of Laado and Arroio do Meio, replacing the provisional structure mounted by the army after the destruction of the original bridge.

Prevention and Solidarity

The series is also dedicated to discussing prevention measures to avoid future tragedies, considering climate change that affect the region. In addition, it highlights the solidarity work that was fundamental during and after the disaster, showing how the community came together to overcome the challenges.

The reports have testimonials of gauchos affected by rains and other important names since the beginning of the rains, such as Governor Eduardo Leite, the mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo. It also has interviews by surfer Pedro Scooby and International player Thiago Maia, two names that were marked to fight and help those hit by floods.
