Baikal Electronics will receive 9.4 billion rubles from the budget for the development of two new Baikal processors. This money is allocated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade following the results of two competitions held.
Baikal Electronics plans to release the first engineering samples of the Baikal-L processor (12 nm, ARMv9 architecture) for tablets and laptops by 2023, and by 2025 – the first batches of Baikal-S2 (6 nm, ARMv9) for cloud computing in data centers.
According to Kommersant, other manufacturers of Russian processors will also receive funding from the budget for “comparable amounts” – for the next five years the state will pursue a policy of import substitution in the field of processors for laptops and tablets.
It is also noted that such devices without a developed ecosystem of software will be of little interest to ordinary users, their main area of use is government agencies and large companies.
