The flip-flop They are not an accessory to be relegated to the beach wardrobe. Or yes? The rubber flip flops are also worn in the city. Or maybe it’s better than? The question is controversial. And, although we had already tried to oppose it almost a year ago, we still don’t all agree in the editorial office.

From that August 2024, in which we had sighted Ashley Olsen on the streets of Manhattan with an almost winter outfit while on his feet he showed off a pair of black flip flops, it passed through water under the bridges. But the flip -flops have continued to fill our Instagram feeds and catwalks, reaching – at least in the world of fashion, which not often coincides with the real one – as Chic footwear to wear with tailoring suits.

While the trend was born on Tiktok: Hope People Know I Am Wearing Flip Flops in the Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Olsen Twins, Copenhagen Minimalist Luxury Kind of Way (“I hope people understand that I wear the flip flops in the style of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, of the Olsen twins and the luxury minimalism of Copenhagen”), the flip flops have made their appearance too On the catwalks of the latest men’s fashion fashion shows (Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Auralee, Camiel Fortengs), and even At the foot of Jonathan Bailey at the photocall of Jurassic World Rebirth in London on June 16th.

We therefore decided to review the reasons of the yes and those of the No, comparing Two points of view: that of those who wear the flip-flops (or would like to wear them) even in the city, and those of those who categorically categorically relegate them to the holidays by the sea (or perhaps not even those).

Because I wear flip-flop (or I would like to wear them) also in the city: 4 very valid reasons
He also wore them the most chic of all: Carolyn Bessette
And besides her Olsen twins. That is, my points of reference in terms of minimal and refined elegance. Here is revealed the main reason why they are not against a pair of rubber flip flops in the city. Last summer – inspired by my seven -year -old son who fit a pair of flip flops in early summer, and until September he no longer wants to wear (he would also take them to school, if only I didn’t force him to abandon them) – I found myself looking for images that consecrated the beach flip flops worthy to complete any city outfit. And I haven’t struggled to find them. Starting from Carolyn Bessette Kennedy – unique in creating elegant outfits starting from the simplest elements: a pair of jeans, black flip flops, and its iconic sunglasses – to reach the Olsen twinswhich brought them to the catwalk of The Row, up to many Influencer and editor of Copenhagen who wear them daily in the streets of the city and in the front row at the fashion shows (we will see if the trend will be confirmed to the next Copenhagen Fashion Week in early August). But be careful: it seems easy, but it is not. Hence the concern of many on Tiktok who ironically write: will they understand that I am wearing the besette-style flip-flops or will think that he is only wearing flip-flops?

Have the charm of contrasts
I fully agree with Laura Reilly of Magasin: I also love the combination of an elegant outfit and super casual flip flops. The rubber flop flips are transformed into versatile accessory and even chic if combined with extremely refined looks. It is a challenge, therefore, that we can win by entrusting us to a couple of golden rules. First of all, in order to wear them also in the city and once the summer is over, combine elegant and tailored looks. And then choose them in a monochromatic version, certainly black, or red, which are well combined with an elegant black and white outfit. And finally: impeccable feet! But this is obvious right?
They are democratic
Their charm, in my opinion, also derives from their accessibility. There is no need to buy an impressively expensive version of the The Row. It is sufficient to wear a basic and cheap but still quality model – with the Brazilian Havaianas in the lead, created and patented in 1962 – to be able to replicate the fashion influencer look admired by everyone all over the world.
Their simplicity reminds me of the light -heartedness of childhood (that of my son who does not take them away throughout the summer), and the infinite possibilities of the summer holidays.
I bought my first pair of Havaianas in Brazil in 2004 during the degree trip. I wore them for the ten consecutive summers. And I would have continued to do it, if they hadn’t stolen them, in the summer of 2014, to Phi Phi Island where I had left them out of a shop, as it is customary to do in Thailand. More than having to walk under the island (until the purchase of another pair of flip flops) I am sorry to have lost that travel souvenir that he had experienced so many adventures.

The classic rubber flip flops I believe are suitable only for environments such as beaches and swimming pools for both aesthetics and functionality: I find them inappropriate in contexts other than these. I think it does not make sense and it is not at all pleasant to walk with a pair of plastic slippers in the 39th degrees that are now reached in the city and that it is not very elegant “Ciabatta” in museums, offices and in numerous public places. Already a sandal version in leather, with two more lists, can make the difference (in addition to being far more breathable!).
And the hygiene?
From the hygienic point of view In the city they do not seem the best because they discover the foot a lot and in the same way, for their conformation, I don’t find them safe Especially if you sweat: they know how to slip insured on certain surfaces.
They are uncomfortable
I don’t find them comfortable in generalbecause I don’t like the feeling of having something, especially plastic, between hallucasses and second finger (but it is a completely subjective question).
Do they pollute?
They never enjoyed my sympathies and it degenerated when, I believe about ten years ago, I read a study that highlighted the responsibility in terms of pollution: estimated that about 90 of the 8 million tons of plastic which were then recorded in the oceans were composed by them, simple flip flops (which are used by billions of people in the world to replace the shoes and disposed of in an unregulated way).
