O CNN Specialist in international relations, Rubens Barbosa, said this Tuesday (5th) that the accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a victory for the alliance, but it also represents increasing concern about a reaction from Russia.
“Russia has already moved powerful weapons to Kaliningrad, which is opposite Sweden. It increases the uncertainty of everything that is happening”, said the CNN Specialist.
The approval of Sweden and Finland as members of NATO was possible with the lifting of Turkey’s veto, on the condition that opponents of the Turkish regime in these territories were extradited.
Barbosa also highlighted the importance of another development linked to the alliance. At the last NATO summit, held at the end of June in Madrid, Spain, Japan, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand participated for the first time. The debut of Asian countries also generated a reaction from China. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has warned against expanding military alliances.
