According to CNN expert on international relations Rubens Barbosa, sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin will not change his position, and he will remain obstinate in maintaining his narrative of defending Russian national security.
“I don’t think sanctions will change the president’s resolve. [russo, Vladimir] Putin. He believes he has a mission to eliminate any risk to Russia’s security,” he said.
On the other hand, Barbosa said that Ukraine had made progress in terms of a possible negotiation for peace.
“The President of Ukraine recognized that the doors of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) are closed to his country. This is a first positive sign because this is one of President Putin’s most important demands.”
In Barbosa’s opinion, the efforts of the United States and its allies against Russia have had an effect.
“I think that he [Putin] underestimated two consequences of the invasion of Ukrainian territory. First, the resistance of the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian government. And according to how quickly the Western world, the United States and the European Union, came together to impose sanctions and present a united front against Russia,” he concluded.
