Rubens Barbosa: US diplomat reflects the thinking of the Biden administration

Diplomat Elizabeth Bagley, nominated by President Joe Biden to be US ambassador to Brazil, took part, on Wednesday (18), in a hearing in the US Senate about the position she should hold in Brasilia.

Asked about statements by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) related to the reliability of the Brazilian electoral system, Bagley said that she believes in democracy and the country’s elections.

For former ambassador Rubens Barbosa, CNN Specialist , the diplomat “was realistic”. “She was very objective in defending Brazilian institutions, strengthening them, and how this will generate the possibility of fair elections”, evaluated Barbosa.

In response to Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, Bagley stated that “Bolsonaro said many things, but basically Brazil has been a democracy, it has democratic institutions, a democratic electoral system, an independent judiciary, an independent legislature and freedom of expression.”

“They have all the democratic institutions they need to have a free and fair election,” said the diplomat, appointed to the post in January of this year.

To CNN Specialist , Bagley “reflects the thinking of the Biden administration”. “She made reference to the president’s speeches, which we know well […] The messages that came from different levels were confirmed by her now in the commission. In diplomatic terms, it is impossible to be more emphatic,” she says,

Barbosa states that the “great concern of the USA is that the president’s statements [Bolsonaro] lead to military intervention”.

However, he believes that Bagley’s statements may have repercussions on the relationship between governments. “The US and Brazilian governments have been talking about the Summit of the Americas, scheduled for July 4th. Bolsonaro doesn’t want to go, and these statements could make the president’s decision even more difficult,” says Barbosa.
