According to CNN Specialist In international relations Rubens Barbosa, replacing Russian oil with Venezuelan oil is not such a simple matter for the United States.
With the sanctions against Russian oil imposed by Washington, the US government is negotiating with the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, the purchase of oil from the South American country. Caracas had broken ties with the White House in 2019 after the failed attempt to overthrow the government.
“In the short term, there would be no technical conditions to increase Venezuelan production given the condition of PDVSA, the country’s oil company, without investment and technical support. So it’s not so easy to replace [do petróleo russo] for Venezuela’s oil,” said Barbosa.
On the situation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Rubens Barbosa commented on the difficulties in reaching an agreement between the parties.
“Right now, I find it very difficult to have any understanding given the rigidity of the positions”, he concluded.
