According to CNN Specialist in international relations, Rubens Barbosa, Ukraine hopes that countries can guarantee that Russia will not attempt a new invasion after a possible peace agreement between the countries.
“If these countries accept and guarantee peace between Russia and Ukraine, Russia will have to respect it. Because if there is no respect for this decision, there will be a rapid escalation and, then, the NATO countries, even if Ukraine does not join NATO, will have a basis to defend Ukraine.”
Barbosa said that Russian troops have gained territories to be used as bargaining chips in negotiations with Ukraine.
“They (Russian soldiers) are concentrating on the territories that are being occupied in eastern Ukraine, to perhaps gain complete possession of these territories as a margin of negotiation,” he said.
The expert said that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine showed some progress, however, they are still far from an agreement for the end of the war.
“I think the news is better, but the positions are very tight. And I don’t see how this negotiation can move forward quickly in the near future.”
