Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said he spoke to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Friday (7), about the upcoming negotiations between the two nations to end the war in Ukraine, describing the connection as “constructive”.
“Ukraine wants war to end, and US leadership is essential to achieving lasting peace. We also discuss ways to advance our bilateral cooperation, ”wrote Sybiha on X.
The next meetings in Saudi Arabia follow previous conversations between the US and Russia, of which Kiev was excluded.
Russia has no planned meetings for next week in Saudi Arabia, a Kremlin spokesman told CNN This Friday, confirming that Moscow will not participate in this round of negotiations.
Amid the developments, Trump threatened new sanctions to Russia, including his banking sector, in response to Moscow’s continuous bombing to Ukraine. The president’s main economist told reporters at the White House on Friday that Trump’s threat is an effort to bring the parties to the negotiating table.
“President Trump is adamant that we need to take everyone to the table, and we can do it with carrots, and we can do it with clubs, and he is talking to everyone, and he has a lot of potential proposals he could play to take them to the table,” said Kevin Hassett, who acts as director of the national economic council.
Hassett said that what approach the administration decides to follow “it’s something that is underway,” but both Trump and Rubio “are working on this every day.”
