Rubio wants to argue with Bukele sending detainees to prison in El Salvador

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will discuss the possibility of deporting alleged members of the Aragua’s Tren Gang to El Salvador at a next meeting with SalvadoRenho President Nayib Bukele, according to the special department’s special envoy for Latin America, Mauricio Claver-Carone.

“We are seeking to make a new agreement that may include the Aragua Tren members, who will want to return to Venezuela instead of having to divide the prison with the Salvadoran gangs like the MS-13. It is part of what we want to discuss and how President Bukele can help us, ”Claver-Carone told reporters on Friday (31). He has also praised Bukele’s security efforts in recent years.

Since taking office in 2019, Bukele has launched a strong campaign to repression of crime in El Salvador, holding tens of thousands of people on suspicion of gangs.

Before suffering from the highest homicide rate in any country outside a war zone, El Salvador now has less homicides than the United States, according to government figures. But human rights activists say that the Bukele administration approach is very wide – a new legislation introduced as part of repression allows police to hold citizens without evidence.

Last year, El Salvador opened a new and controversial maximum security arrest for alleged gang members, known as the Terrorism Confinement Center, or Cecot.

Rubio begins his tour of Central America this weekend and is expected to reach the capital Salvadorenha San Salvador on Monday (3).
