The New Zealand actor Russell Crowe 60, revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine that the last time he watched “Gladiator” (2000) was at a screening held at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, in 2018, to raise money for charity. He, who plays the protagonist Maximus in the plot, revealed that he was embarrassed at the event.
“The last time I saw ‘Gladiator’ was at the Colosseum in Rome and I was a little embarrassed that it got so much attention. It’s an incredible cast, with beautiful performances from start to finish,” he said.
Crowe said he would like every young actor to have a production like the title of Ridley Scott in his career. The actor won an Oscar for his role in the plot.
“We made this movie in 1999 and I’ll bet money that somewhere in the world tonight it’s playing primetime on television. It’s got the longest legs and people, you know, they’re not just connected, they love it with a passion,” he said.
“Gladiator” is about to get a sequel. The New Zealand actor previously stated that he is “uncomfortable” with the new production, but that it will not affect the title’s reputation.
The sequel begins years after the events of the first film, in which Maximus, a powerful Roman general, arouses the wrath of Marcus Aurelius’ son, Commodus, before the emperor’s death. When the heir takes power, he is sentenced to death, however, he manages to escape and goes into hiding as a slave and gladiator while seeking revenge.
The film will have a time jump and has Paul Mescal as the protagonist. The plot will center on Lucius, son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus, who was inspired by Maximus. In “Gladiator” (2000), the character is a child, played by Spencer Treat Clark .
When he was still young, Lucilla sent him to the north coast of Africa, to a region called Numidia which was – at that time – beyond the reach of the Roman Empire. When he was older, he lives a relatively peaceful life with his wife and children until the conquerors of his homeland invade his new home, led by a general trained by Maximus, played by Peter Pascal .
In addition to Mescal and Pascal, names like Denzel Washington , Connie Nielsen , Joseph Quinn are also in the cast. Like the first film, the sequel is directed by Ridley Scott known for driving “Alien, the Eighth Passenger” (1979) and “Prometheus” (2012).
The first images of “Gladiator 2” were released on Monday (1st). See below.
