Russia: 16 dead in a collision between a minivan and two trucks in the Volga region

Sixteen people were killed today when a minibus and two trucks collided in the Russian town of Ulyanovsk (in the Volga region), Russian news agencies reported.

According to witnesses cited by the news agencies, a truck left its lane when it collided with a minibus traveling in the opposite direction, near the village of Nikolayevka. At the time of the accident, the minibus was also hit in the rear by another truck.

In the images shown by the Russian television network Ren TV, the minibus appears to have been almost flattened by the two trucks.

“According to preliminary data, the driver of a truck drove the vehicle into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with a minibus,” the Interior Ministry of the Ulyanovsk region said in a statement.

In the traffic accident, 15 people were killed, all citizens of Kazakhstan, announced the rescue services cited by the Russian public agency Ria Novosti.

Three other people — two men and a woman — are hospitalized in serious condition, the governor of the Ulyanovsk region, Alexei Ruskikh, wrote on Telegram.

Violations of the road traffic code are common in Russia, where there have been several fatal bus accidents in recent years.

In January, five people were killed and 21 injured in a bus crash in the Ryazan region, about 270 kilometers south of Moscow.

In December 2019, a bus with nearly 40 passengers plunged into a frozen river in the Zabaikalsk region of Siberia, killing 19 people and injuring 21 others.
