Russia: 17 killed in powerful blast at chemical plant

Seventeen people lost their lives today from strong explosion, and fire subsequently caused, in factory production of gunpowder and chemicals in its western province of Ryazan Russia.

The disaster destroyed almost the entire shift of 17 employees who were at the site at the time, according to a list of names posted on social media and as broadcast by international news agencies.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, all 17 workers lost their lives. The bodies of 16 were retrieved from the rubble while one died at the hospital.

A video shows the moment of the explosion, with a huge one yellow fiery sphere rising in the sky, while the photos from the next stages showed a scene of complete destruction, with the smoke still rising from the ruins.

The first estimates for the causes of the explosion

A source quoted by the TASS news agency attributed the explosion to “violations during the technological process “.

According to the same source, the building has been completely destroyed and only individual constructions remain.

At the same time, rescuers found several tons nitrate in the building, which is diluted with water to exclude the possibility of a new explosion.

The Investigative Committee prosecuted for violating the safety rules in units of risk, according to the same sources.

The chairman of the Commission of Inquiry, Alexander Bastrykin, sent to the Ryazan region special group criminologists to investigate the causes of the accident.

The Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations also arrived at the scene of the accident Alexander Tsuprian.

The Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the region stated that the families of the victims will be given compensation of 1 million rubles (12,219 euros).

The governor of the Ryazan region, Nikolai Lyubimov, preached on October 25th day of mourning, while asked the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the regulatory authority of technical inspections to carry out inspections in industrial units in the area that produce high risk products.

Four similar events in 2019

The factory “Razriad” in the premises of which the fire occurred specializes in the production of industrial explosives while dealing with mood ammunition.

The company is housed in the premises of the Elastik synthetic fiber factory which was declared in bankruptcy in 2015. Previously, the company produced air defense equipment and multiple rocket launchers for multi-launcher missile systems.

The latest similar incidents at explosives factories in Russia were in 2019, when four such events were recorded simultaneously.

The largest of these was the series of explosions that took place on June 1 in the unit “crystal(Owned by the state-owned company Rostec) in the city of Dzerzhinsk in the Nizhny Novgorod region. There were no dead then, but 89 injured.

In terms of the number of of the dead, the accident in the Ryazan region is the biggest that happened in an industrial unit since 2016, when in the mine “Severnaya” in the Komi Republic, after two explosions that occurred in a row with a difference of three days were killed in total 36 people (30 during the first explosion).
