About 300 servicemen from Dagestan from the 136th motorized rifle brigade stationed in Buynaksk, a month after the start of the war in Ukraine, refused to participate in the hostilities and arbitrarily left Ukraine.
A section of the said military began the contract termination process and returned to Buynaksk. Some of them, after being hospitalized and under the pressure of their relatives, returned to Ukraine, writes the English-language newspaper The Moscow Times citing two human rights activists. According to the newspaper, the soldiers claimed to be facing problems with their uniforms and weaponry, and some soldiers returned to Dagestan with frostbite on their limbs, resulting in amputations.
In Buynaksk those who returned were treated like deserters. The local authorities during an assembly they held condemned their actions, and at this time the military prosecutor’s office is conducting checks, as absence from the place of duty for a period of more than 10 days can be considered a criminal offense, explained one of the humanitarian activists in newspaper The Moscow Times
Dagestan, a mountainous, predominantly Muslim region in the Caspian Sea region, has recorded one of its highest military death tolls during the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
The incident with the Dagestan servicemen follows reports by rights activists that 150 other soldiers from the autonomous republic of Buryatia in Siberia refused to go to Ukraine earlier in July after a rare video appeal by their wives that they posted on social media.
Dagestan and Buryatia share the highest official death toll from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with military deaths exceeding 200 in each region.
