Russia: 5.9 magnitude earthquake shakes the Kuril Islands

Earthquake magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred on Kuril Islands The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) announced today, Tuesday (13/7) in the early morning hours.

According to the EMSC, the earthquake had a focal depth of 12 kilometers, transmits the APE-MPE.

According to the head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismological station, Yelena Semyonova, at 11.30 (03.00 Greek time) seismographs recorded an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, a short distance from the Kuril Islands.

The epicenter was reported 111 kilometers south of the island of Simusir, with a focal depth of 59 kilometers, according to the epicenter.

Seismologists said no tsunami alert was issued, adding that no injuries or damage were reported.

Earlier, on the shores of the peninsula Kamchatka and the Kurils had recorded four seismic tremors measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale.

However, seismographs later recorded a new earthquake in Kamchatka measuring 6 on the Richter scale, said the competent directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the region of Kamchatka. The quake had a focal depth of 33 km and its epicenter was recorded 136 km east of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region.
