Russia accuses Ukraine of supporting jihadists in Syria

Russia’s UN ambassador on Tuesday accused Ukraine’s military intelligence service of providing aid to the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group, which has been leading an offensive against government forces in northwestern Syria since last Wednesday. “We want to draw particular attention to the recognizable traces pointing to (…) the direction of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, GUR, in organizing hostilities and supplying weapons to militants in northwestern Syria,” Vassily Nebenzia said during a meeting of the Security Council dedicated to rekindling the war in Syria. “We are referring to the identification in the province of Ukrainian military instructors (…) who are training HTS fighters in combat tactics,” he added. “The HTS fighters not only do not hide the fact that they are supported by Ukraine, they brag about it,” he added, accusing Kiev of supplying them with drones in particular. “Collaboration between Ukrainian and Syrian terrorists motivated by hatred against Syria and Russia is ongoing, […]
