Russia accuses Wagner Group chief of organizing armed rebellion

Russia’s Attorney General Igor Krasnov made a report to President Vladimir Putin on the initiation of criminal proceedings against the head of the Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

“The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Krasnov informed Putin about the initiation of criminal proceedings in connection with an attempt to organize an armed rebellion,” he told Russian state media RIA Novosti on Friday (23).

According to him, the Attorney General also informed the President about the legality of initiating such a criminal case.

In Moscow, security measures were stepped up following explosive comments by the leader of the Wagner Group, according to Russian state media Tass. “Security measures have been strengthened in Moscow, all the most important facilities, state authorities and transport infrastructure facilities have been taken under greater protection,” Russia’s law enforcement agencies told the agency.

The statements came after threats made by the head of the Wagner Group against his own allies. He accused the Russian military leadership of attacking one of his military camps and killing a “large amount” of his mercenary forces. Then he promised to attack official Russian forces as a reprisal.

Then Russia’s top commander in Ukraine, Sergey Surovikin, ordered the mercenaries to stop the rebellion and obey President Vladimir Putin.
