A high-ranking Russian official accused the West on Wednesday of increasing political pressure on Moscow by providing weapons and ammunition to support Ukraine during a standoff over a Russian military escalation.
Moscow has concentrated troops near Ukraine and has scheduled military exercises in Belarus, Ukraine’s close ally to northern Ukraine, raising fears it could invade the country. Russia denies any plans to attack Ukraine.
Countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom provided Ukraine with military aid, which included anti-tank missiles and launchers to help it defend itself. Others, like Germany, sent helmets, eschewing aid with lethal weaponry.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the military supplies to Ukraine represent Western “blackmail and pressure”.
“Everything that is happening in terms of supplying Ukraine with equipment, ammunition, military equipment, including lethal weapons, is an attempt to put additional political pressure on us, as well as likely military technical pressure,” Ryabkov said, according to the news agency. RIA news.
Ukraine’s desire to get politically closer to the West is widely seen abroad as a top concern for Moscow, which seeks security guarantees from the West that vetoes Kiev’s accession to the Western military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and stop the expansion of the military alliance towards the east.
