Russia: After the start of the war 148 teachers were prosecuted for their anti-war views

Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at least 148 teachers in Russia have been prosecuted for their anti-war positions, according to research by the human rights advocacy website OVD-Info. These are school teachers, professors of higher and higher educational institutions. Criminal cases were filed against 23 teachers, while administrative prosecutions were brought against 106. The criminal charges were brought under the articles of fake news about the Russian military, defamation of the Russian military and justification of terrorism. For example, English teacher Irina Gen from Penza was given a five-year suspended sentence for spreading fake news about the Russian military, because in a conversation with her students she spoke out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Most professors (59%) prosecuted were eventually fired (82 fired, three banned from teaching). Of those persecuted, 22 teachers emigrated, while five left Russia.
