Russia: Air exercises in Kaliningrad amid tensions over NATO expansion

Russian Su-27 fighter jets took part in exercises to repel a virtual air strike on the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, the Interfax news agency reported on Saturday, citing the Baltic Fleet, according to Reuters.

The exercises came two days after Finland announced plans to apply for NATO membership, with Sweden likely to follow suit – moves to expand the Western military alliance that Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he intends to pursue. .

The press service of the Russian Baltic Sea Fleet said that Su-27 fighter jets “destroyed” the planes of the simulated enemy during the exercises, Interfax reported.

According to the report, more than 10 Su-27 crews of the Baltic Sea Fleet participated in the exercises.
