Anatoly Chubais, the Russian reformer who resigned as the Kremlin’s special envoy over his opposition to the war in Ukraine, is being treated in Europe with a rare autoimmune neurological disease, a Russian journalist reported.
Chubais has been diagnosed with “Guillain-Barre syndrome”, a disease in which the immune system destroys the patient’s peripheral nervous system, Russian journalist and political activist Xenia Sobchak reported, citing his statement on Telegram.
Chubais was not immediately available for comment.
It is not clear where in Europe Chubais, 67, who fled Russia after resigning in March, is being treated.
Chubais, who previously served as chief of staff to the country’s former president Boris Yeltsin, was President Putin’s special representative for the country’s ties with international organizations before he resigned.
The most powerful of a group of Russian economists who attempted to consolidate the transition to capitalism after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Chubais privatized much of Russian industry in the 1990s.
