Russia and North Korea began the construction of a road bridge between the two countries, which will cross the Tumen River, as part of an effort to strengthen its strategic partnership, the Russian Prime Minister said.
The bridge is being built near the current “Friendship Bridge”, a rail structure inaugurated in 1959, after the Korea War.
In a ceremony dedicated to the beginning of the construction of the new bridge, Russian prime minister Mikhail Mishustin said this is a significant event in relations between Russia and North Korea, state news agency Tass said.
“The importance goes far beyond a mere engineering task. It symbolizes our common desire to strengthen friendly relationships and a good neighborhood and increase interregional cooperation,” said Mishustin, according to the agency.
The new road bridge, which has been discussed for years, will be 850 meters and will connect to the Russian road system. The construction was right during a visit by President Vladimir Putin to North Korea in 2024.
The Russian newspaper Kommersant pointed out that the structure will be ready in the summer of 2026.
Mishustin commented that the bridge “will allow entrepreneurs to significantly increase transport volumes and reduce costs, ensuring the reliable and stable supply of various products, which will contribute to the expansion of trade and economic cooperation.”
