Russia and Ukraine agree to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war

Russia and Ukraine agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war on each side, Ukraine Defense Minister Rustem Umarov told TV on Friday (16) at the end of negotiations in Istanbul.

The Russian delegation confirmed the information soon after.

If the exchange is carried out, it will be the largest change of prisoners in more than three years since the Ukraine invasion of Russia in February 2022.

Conversations mark the first direct negotiations between the two countries in three years, after pressure from US President Donald Trump to end Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II.

The expectations of an advance, already low, were even more shaken on Thursday (15), when Trump said there would be no advance without a meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A Turkish delegation also participates in the meeting.
