Almost 800 prisoners – half of Ukraine and half of Russia – were released as part of the large prisoners’ exchange between the two countries, according to Russian authorities.
The Ministry of Defense stated that 270 Russian military and 120 civilians were exchanged for the same number of Ukrainian military and civilians on Friday (23).
Russian prisoners were receiving psychological and medical assistance in Belarus, according to the ministry.
Authorities added that they plan to continue the exchange “in the coming days.”
The two parts in conflict agreed, at last week’s meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye, to exchange a thousand prisoners on each side.
On Friday morning (23), US President Donald Trump confirmed that the exchange had happened in a publication on the social network Truth Social.
“A great exchange of prisoners has just been completed between Russia and Ukraine. It will come into force soon. Congratulations to both sides by this negotiation. This can lead to something big ???”, Trump wrote in a platform post.
