Russia and the United States have started conversations about rare land metals and other joint projects in Russia, and some companies have already shown interest in them, said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s investment in comments published on Monday (31).
Amid the efforts of US President Donald Trump to end the war in Ukraine, mineral cooperation was launched by Kiev and Moscow, although Trump said on Sunday (30) that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to give up a proposed deal.
In February, Putin suggested that the United States could be interested in the joint exploration of rare land deposits in Russia, which has the fifth largest world reserve of metals used in lasers and military equipment.
Kirill Dmitiev, Kremlin special envoy for economic cooperation and international investments, told Izvestia newspaper that the conversations had already begun.
“Rare land metals are an important area for cooperation and, of course, we started discussions about various rare land metals and [outros] Projects in Russia, ”said Dmitiev, who is also a CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund.
Dmitiev, who was part of the Russian negotiation team in conversations with US authorities in Saudi Arabia in February, said some companies have already shown interest in the projects, but has not named any of them and did not give further details.
Trump said on Sunday that he was “angry” with Putin and will impose 25% to 50% secondary rates on Russian oil buyers feel that Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
According to Trump, irritation began after Putin criticized the credibility of Zelensky’s leadership last week. Subsequently, the American reiterated to reporters that he was disappointed with his Russian colleague, but added, “I think we are progressing step by step.”
China’s control over 95% of global production and rare land metal supplies, crucial to industries such as defense and consumer electronics, has made the rest of the world focus on trying to develop their own supplies.
The US geological service estimates Russia’s rare land reserves in 3.8 million metric tons, but Moscow has much larger estimates.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Russia has reserves of 15 rare land metals, totaling 28.7 million tons – according to January 2023. Another 3.8 million tons represent the number of reserves under development or ready for development.
Izvestia reported that cooperation can be discussed more detail in the next round of Russian-eu negotiations, which may occur in mid-April in Saudi Arabia.
