Russia announces cancellation of classes in Belgorod after attack on kindergarten

Some kindergartens will be closed for a week in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine, while several schools will hold classes online after a Ukrainian attack destroyed a nursery on Monday (2), the region’s governor said.

“It’s a bad morning for the Belgorod region,” Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a post on the social network VKontakte on the day classes were due to resume after the summer holidays.

“A kindergarten in the city of Belgorod was almost completely destroyed,” he added.

After the attack, authorities decided that several schools in the city’s large Kharkovskaya Gora district would hold classes virtually, while kindergartens would be closed for a week, Gladkov said.

Russian air defense units destroyed a drone launched from Ukraine overnight, the Defense Ministry reported on Telegram.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports.

Ukrainian forces have long subjected the city of Belgorod and nearby districts to shelling and other attacks.

Kiev says its strikes target infrastructure essential to Moscow’s war efforts.

Both sides deny attacking civilians in the 30-month-old war, which was triggered by Moscow’s invasion of its smaller neighbor.

On Sunday, Gladkov said Ukrainian shelling had killed one person and wounded more than a dozen in the region, whose administrative center is the city of Belgorod.
