Russia’s Interior Ministry has included Peter Verzilov, publisher of the independent media outlet Mediazona, in the list of wanted persons on suspicion of hiding dual citizenship, his lawyer said today.
Russia’s Investigative Committee announced last year that it had launched a criminal case against Verzilov, a well-known critic of the Kremlin, for failing to say that he had also acquired Canadian citizenship.
“This did not happen today, an arrest warrant for Piotr was issued half a year ago. This is related to the criminal case for the second passport (Piotr is a citizen of Russia, but also of Canada), which began after the investigation they had “He is not in Russia in the summer of 2020.”
According to the investigating authorities, in December 2014, Verzilov acquired Canadian citizenship and did not inform the Russian authorities. In the next five years, which followed, according to the version of the Commission of Inquiry, he did not inform the authorities about the acquisition of the second citizenship. Mediazona clarified that his father lived in Canada and he went to school there and after finishing it he got Canadian citizenship.
Verzilov, as well as the Mediazona website and its director Sergei Smirnov, were included in the register of “foreign agents” on September 29.
