Russia arrests eight people over Crimea bridge explosion

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday that it had arrested eight people, five Russians and three Ukrainian and Armenian nationals, for the explosion that damaged the Crimean bridge last Saturday (8). ).

The FSB said the blast was organized by Ukrainian military intelligence and its director, Kyrylo Budanov. The explosive device was transferred from Ukraine to Russia via Bulgaria, Georgia and Armenia.

The entity, which is the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, also revealed that it had avoided Ukrainian attacks on Moscow and the city of Bryansk.

Ukraine has not officially confirmed its involvement in the bridge explosion, but some officials in the country have celebrated the damage.

A part of the bridge was destroyed, temporarily stopping road traffic. Several fuel tanks were also damaged, on a truck heading towards the Crimexia peninsula.

The bridge, a prestigious project opened personally by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018, has become logistically vital to his military campaign, with supplies for troops fighting in southern Ukraine channeled through it.

Russian forces launched massive missiles against Ukrainian cities, including energy sources. At a televised meeting of Russia’s Security Council on Monday, Putin said the attacks were retaliation for the explosion on the Crimean bridge, which he said was organized by Ukraine’s secret services.
