Russia arrests general accused of collaborating with Wagner Group: report

The authorities of Russia promoted, this Wednesday, the arrest of general Sergei Surovikin, under the accusation of having collaborated with the riot carried out last Saturday by the Wagner Group. The information is from the Russian newspaper The Moscow Times. The publication cites two sources from the Ministry of Defense.

According to the publication, the detention took place “in the context of the situation with Prigozhin”, with one of the sources claiming that the general, who once led the “special military operation”, would have “chosen the side” of the Wagner group during the rebellion.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment on the case.

Information about Surovikin’s arrest began to circulate on Wednesday on various Telegram pages with links to Russia. According to Russian military bloggers, the general was detained on Sunday.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that a senior Russian general knew of Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin’s plans to trigger a mutiny against Russia’s military leaders. The information was obtained by the publication from statements by US intelligence officials.

The news calls into question, once again, the unity of Russian military forces in relation to the operation in Ukraine and also the opinions of senior officials regarding the influence that the Wagner Group played in relation to the Putin government. And the statements reinforced suspicions about Surovikin.
