Russia asks foreign countries for assistance in the arrest of cryptocurrencies

For the first time, Russia sent requests to foreign law enforcement agencies for legal assistance in criminal cases related to the arrest of cryptocurrency, writes TASS, citing the speech of the Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov at the VIII meeting of the Interstate Council on Combating Corruption in Yekaterinburg. According to Krasnov, one of the states that received such a request was Kazakhstan, reports RBC Crypto.

In February, local law enforcement officers seized the property of a Russian man, whose name was not disclosed, for illegal operations with cryptocurrency. A criminal case was initiated against the organizers of the work of five illegal exchange offices. Later, another illegal crypto exchange with a turnover of over $30 million was liquidated.

“I have no doubt that over time the number of such requests will increase significantly. However, their execution will be impossible if each jurisdiction begins to use its own procedures that are not applicable in the requested country,” Krasnov said.

According to the Prosecutor General, there are also risks of using cryptocurrencies to move illegally obtained income abroad, including through corruption. He invited the participants to summarize the methods that fraudsters use to commit corruption offences. Including, according to him, we are talking about the legal regulation of turnover, arrest, confiscation, subsequent storage and sale of cryptocurrency. According to Krasnov, law enforcement agencies need to develop joint proposals for further coordinated actions.

Last week, the Supreme Court recognized for the first time that converting cryptocurrencies into rubles is money laundering. This decision was taken as part of the consideration of the case concerning drug trafficking. Experts interviewed by RBC-Crypto explained what this could mean for ordinary Russian cryptocurrency users. Later, representatives of Rosfinmonitoring explained their position on this issue in a commentary for RBC.
