Russia: Authorities are investigating a former lawmaker for spreading ‘fake news’ about the Russian military

Russian authorities are investigating former State Duma deputy Ilya Panomaryov and critic of the Kremlin, who is in exile in Ukraineto spread “fake newsn” for the Russian army, the TASS news agency reported citing a Moscow court.

In accordance with Russian news agency, investigators have requested his “arrest in absentia,” which effectively makes him a wanted man and means certain arrest should he return to Russia.

According to a law passed eight days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the “publicly disseminating deliberately false information;” for the Russian armed forces is a criminal act and is punishable by a fine or, in more serious cases, a prison sentence of more than 15 years, as relayed by the Athens News Agency.

A Moscow councilor, Alexei Gorynov, was sentenced in July to seven years in prison after being convicted of the crime. Two other factors in the Russian opposition, Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Kara-Murzahave been remanded in custody for similar cases.

Last week another critic of the war, the former mayor of Yekaterinburg, Yevgeny Roizman, was accused of defaming the armed forces when he characterized Moscow’s actions in Ukraine as an invasion. This offense is considered a felony and is punishable by a maximum three-year prison term and a worst-case prison term of five years or more.

Panomaryov began to come under strong pressure in Russia since becoming the only MP among the 450 deputies of the State Duma (lower house) to vote against the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

In a post on the Telegram messaging app, Panomaryov referring to this latest development, he wrote that this will be the second time he has been arrested in absentia.
